Despite the Toronto Raptors’ serious interest in bringing veteran forward DeMar DeRozan aboard, another franchise is now positioning itself to join the pursuit.
Per Marc Stein, the Detroit Pistons are actively exploring the possibility of adding DeRozan to strengthen their offensive attack.
Although the Raptors are still viewed as the frontrunners to secure the veteran’s services, Detroit presents an intriguing alternative one that could offer DeRozan a more prominent role, given their clear need for his scoring prowess.
A fuller picture of DeRozan’s potential landing spots is expected to take shape once LeBron James announces his decision regarding his next team.
Is DeMar DeRozan open to a Raptors reunion?
With no trade solutions materializing, the Sacramento Kings elected to waive DeRozan, elevating the six-time NBA All-Star to one of the most coveted free agents on the market.
In the previous season, he put up 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game with Sacramento, while connecting on 49.7% of his field-goal attempts.
DeRozan has also been entangled in speculation involving LeBron James, as clubs eyeing the four-time MVP are said to regard DeRozan as a fallback option should their attempts to land James fall short.
That said, a reunion with the Raptors would genuinely demand that DeRozan embrace a notably altered role. With RJ Barrett, Scottie Barnes, and Kawhi Leonard once the trade is finalized already occupying the wing positions, the 36-year-old veteran would likely need to adapt to coming off the bench.
Ultimately, if DeRozan is sincerely inclined toward a return and the Raptors remain receptive to the idea, there appear to be no substantial hurdles standing in the way of his comeback to Toronto.
