Pistons’ Jalen Duren Contract Talks Get New Update From NBA Insider

The Detroit Pistons and restricted free agent Jalen Duren remain at an impasse in contract negotiations, with only “modest” progress reported in recent weeks . While the Pistons have consistently described re-signing the 22-year-old All-NBA center as their top offseason priority, the two sides appear far apart on financial terms .

Duren’s bargaining position was dramatically strengthened when he earned All-NBA Third Team honors for the 2025-26 season alongside Tyrese Maxey, Jamal Murray, Jalen Johnson, and Chet Holmgren . The selection made him eligible for the highest designated rookie-scale extension tier, which could reach approximately five years and $287.1 million under the league’s collective bargaining agreement .

Without All-NBA qualification, the maximum extension would have been significantly lower, closer to five years and $239.3 million . The award also means Duren can command 30% of the Pistons’ salary cap under the “Derrick Rose” rule, which allows rookie-scale players who earn All-NBA honors to receive a higher percentage .

League executives have broadly expected Duren to command more than **$30 million annually**, with some projections suggesting a final agreement could land in the range of five years and **$200 million to $220 million**, or approximately $40 million to $44 million per year .

Despite a breakout regular season in which Duren averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds while earning his first All-Star selection , his postseason performance has complicated negotiations. During the Pistons’ 14 playoff games, Duren’s production dropped to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest .

Detroit’s front office, led by President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon, has reportedly used this decline as justification for offering less than the full max extension . The Pistons finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 60-22 record, earning the Eastern Conference’s top seed before falling to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round .

Duren has explored potential sign-and-trade pathways out of Detroit, with reports indicating meetings with both the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings . However, those exit strategies have largely failed to materialize. The Lakers addressed their center need by signing Walker Kessler, effectively closing that door .

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Pistons have consistently “brushed aside any introduction of sign-and-trade scenarios” that would send Duren elsewhere . This stance reflects Detroit’s leverage as a restricted free agent, the Pistons retain the right to match any offer sheet Duren might receive .

The stalemate has reportedly led to growing frustration on Duren’s side. NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that Duren is “fed up” with the negotiations and would prefer to leave Detroit . His camp has reportedly considered accepting the $9.62 million qualifying offer for the 2026-27 season, which would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent next summer though such a move would represent a significant short-term financial sacrifice .

The Pistons hold considerable leverage in these negotiations. With few teams possessing the salary cap space to make a competitive offer sheet, Duren’s market has “significantly dwindled” . The Chicago Bulls, Memphis Grizzlies, and Brooklyn Nets are the only teams under the salary cap, and none can offer Duren the kind of payout he is seeking .

Detroit has also been active in roster construction around franchise cornerstone Cade Cunningham, adding John Collins, Isaiah Joe, Gary Harris Jr., and Taurean Prince this offseason . The team’s financial flexibility remains a consideration, as a max deal for Duren combined with Cunningham’s future salary could limit Detroit’s ability to retain depth around its young core .

The question now is whether the two sides can find common ground. Duren’s camp continues to push for a deal closer to the max threshold, while Detroit appears willing to let the process play out rather than overpay .

“Both sides want to get a deal done that makes sense for everyone involved,” a league source told The Athletic . However, with mid-July approaching and the standoff continuing, the saga may drag on without immediate resolution .

For Duren, the options are stark: agree to a long-term deal below his initial demands, accept the qualifying offer and bet on himself for unrestricted free agency next summer, or continue pushing for a trade . For the Pistons, the priority remains clear keep their All-Star big man, but on terms that preserve their championship window.
