On Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox will try to bounce back against the Philadelphia Phillies, and they’ll have the benefit of Willson Contreras returning to the lineup.

Contreras had to leave Boston’s Mother’s Day game against the Tampa Bay Rays after being hit on the hand by a pitch.

The Red Sox had Monday off, which aided his recovery. They then gave Contreras an extra rest day on Tuesday to ensure he was completely ready. That strategy paid off Contreras is back in the starting lineup for Boston’s Wednesday night clash with the Phillies. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m. ET, and Boston released its lineup early Wednesday afternoon.

Boston Red Sox Lineup vs. Philadelphia Phillies (May 13, 2026)

Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras

  1. Jarren Duran, CF

  2. Mickey Gasper, DH

  3. Wilyer Abreu, RF

  4. Willson Contreras, 1B

  5. Masataka Yoshida, LF

  6. Trevor Story, SS

  7. Marcelo Mayer, 2B

  8. Connor Wong, C

  9. Caleb Durbin, 3B

SP. Sonny Gray

Unsurprisingly, the biggest headline is Contreras’s return. Along with Wilyer Abreu, he has been one of Boston’s top and most reliable hitters this season. Given how much the offense has been scuffling, the Red Sox can hardly afford to miss even a single game from Contreras at this stage. Over their past two games, Boston has managed just two total runs.

Mickey Gasper remains in the No. 2 spot, where he also hit on Tuesday. Jarren Duran continues to lead off under interim manager Chad Tracy, though he’s been in a slump. Beyond Ceddanne Rafaela, Contreras, and Abreu, Masataka Yoshida stands out as Boston’s only other consistent hitter. Marcelo Mayer started hot but has cooled off. Connor Wong returns behind the plate, replacing Carlos Narváez, who has been struggling.

Phillies Lineup

Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber

  1. Kyle Schwarber, DH

  2. Bryce Harper, 1B

  3. Adolis García, RF

  4. Brandon Marsh, LF

  5. Alec Bohm, 3B

  6. Bryson Stott, 2B

  7. JT Realmuto, C

  8. Justin Crawford, CF

  9. Edmundo Sosa, SS

SP. Andrew Painter

Kyle Schwarber got Tuesday’s game started with a bang, homering in his first at-bat and making the Red Sox look foolish for not seriously pursuing him in free agency despite their public talk about needing power.

Like the Red Sox, the Phillies have already fired their manager this season. But on paper, Philadelphia’s lineup is formidable. Wednesday could shape up to be another tough night for the slumping Red Sox.
