A Kansas State transfer, Abdi Bashir, won’t be crossing over to the other side of the Sunflower Showdown rivalry. The 6-foot-7 junior guard, who posted 13.2 points per game and shot 44.4% from three-point range last season for the Wildcats, has decided to continue his college career at LSU. Bashir pledged to the SEC program on Friday after drawing interest from KU’s Bill Self earlier in the transfer portal period. The Jayhawks scheduled a Zoom meeting with Bashir to gauge his interest in transferring to Kansas. Self saw him as an intriguing prospect despite his defensive limitations, and there’s no question Bashir could have boosted KU’s outside shooting next season. Ultimately, that didn’t materialize. Bashir also drew looks from St. John’s, Ohio State, and NC State before choosing LSU.
Bashir had a Zoom call with NC State following his conversation with KU. That connection would have made sense, given that former K-State assistant Matthew Driscoll now works on the Wolfpack’s staff. Instead, Bashir is taking his talents to Baton Rouge, where he’ll suit up for Will Wade next season.
A native of Omaha, Bashir began his college journey at Monmouth. After two high-scoring years there, he transferred to K-State and appeared in 18 games for the Wildcats. In his sole season at K-State, he averaged 13.2 points, 2.3 assists, and 2.2 rebounds. He drained 67 three-pointers in a purple uniform before a broken foot cut his season short.
