Without a contract extension from the Detroit Pistons, Jaden Ivey entered the 2025–2026 NBA season under immense pressure.
It was a decisive, career-defining year for the former lottery pick. Unfortunately, by the trade deadline, it became clear that Detroit did not view Ivey as part of their long-term plans.
According to one ranking, Ivey was among the most disappointing Pistons this season.
Was Jaden Ivey the Biggest Letdown?
Sports Illustrated placed Ivey at No. 5 on a five-player list. On the one hand, four other players performed worse in terms of outcomes. On the other hand, making the list despite playing only half the season with the Pistons is a tough situation. Ivey needs all the positive coverage he can get to rebuild his league standing if he hopes to make a comeback.
Clearly, the narrative around his game remains negative.
“Ivey started the season injured, but there was genuine hope that upon his return, he would form a strong backcourt alongside Cade Cunningham. Instead, Ivey struggled to re-establish himself in the rotation, faltering in every aspect of the game. That left the Pistons scrambling near the trade deadline to find a trade partner as his value plummeted,” via Sports Illustrated.
What’s Next for Jaden Ivey?
No one can say for sure. Ivey’s decline was largely due to his on-court performance, but his off-court behavior ultimately led to his release from the Chicago Bulls.
The 24-year-old guard played 30 games for the Pistons in 2025–2026. After averaging 17.6 points on 40.9% three-point shooting, he followed up with averages of 8.2 points on 37.2% from deep.
Detroit made a deal involving Chicago and Minnesota, sending Ivey to the Bulls. He appeared in four games, posting averages of 11.5 points and 4.0 assists. However, a knee injury sidelined him for the rest of the regular season.
Before the season ended, Ivey was released due to “conduct detrimental to the team.” It remains unclear whether Ivey will secure a second contract with any team this offseason. If he does receive offers, they will likely be for the veteran’s minimum or close to it.
