Given how strong the position has historically been, it may come as a surprise, but right-handed-hitting outfielders across MLB have largely underperformed over the last several seasons.
The Phillies have struggled to upgrade in that area, and while Dave Dombrowski certainly deserves blame, it’s also worth noting that the overall production from right-handed outfielders has simply fallen short of expectations for more than four years now.
As the trade deadline approaches, there’s certainly optimism in Philadelphia that the front office will land a right-handed bat for the outfield.
With Adolis García now expected to miss most if not all of the season, the Phillies clearly need to make a move on that front.
One name that has surfaced in connection with Philadelphia is Seiya Suzuki of the Chicago Cubs. Suzuki has been a well-above-average hitter, even though his defensive reputation was once among the worst in the game.
Still, after hitting 32 home runs last year, he’s bound to draw significant interest, and according to recent reporting from The Athletic, he’s likely to command a hefty price.

Charlotte Varnes wrote: “I found Ken Rosenthal’s recent piece on Seiya Suzuki intriguing, especially with the Phillies now searching for a right-handed-hitting outfielder. As Ken pointed out, those types of players will be in high demand at the deadline given how underwhelming that group has been. But can Philadelphia afford to part with the prospect capital required? Would they even want to spend their有限 resources on a rental? And would Suzuki, who holds a no-trade clause, be open to coming to Philadelphia? There are plenty of questions.”

The Phillies need to recognize that even if Suzuki seems within reach, the asking price will probably be steeper than anticipated.
That doesn’t mean they lack the assets to get a deal done, but they may be hesitant to overpay for a right fielder who is slated to become a free agent after the 2027 season.
