Pistons’ Marcus Sasser linked to Mavs in potential trade

Throughout his time with the Detroit Pistons, Marcus Sasser has consistently found himself on the outside looking in when it comes to consistent rotation minutes. He brings clear value as a scoring guard who can knock down threes and finish with a reliable floater, and he’s produced when called upon. Still, at just 6-foot-1 and lacking the playmaking instincts to run an offense, fitting him into the lineup has always been a challenge.

Now, it appears a change of scenery could be on the horizon one that might place him in a system better suited to his skill set, and possibly bring him closer to his hometown in the process.

Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks have surfaced as a primary trade candidate for Sasser, citing league sources. Last season, Sasser appeared in 38 games, posting 5.2 points per contest while logging just 12 minutes a night. He frequently found himself inactive, as Detroit leaned on Cade Cunningham and Daniss Jenkins at point guard, while cycling through Duncan Robinson, Javonte Green, Jaden Ivey, and Caris LeVert at the two.

In the minutes he did receive, Sasser shot efficiently from deep at 41%, and he provided a spark for a stagnant offense during the playoff series against Cleveland.

From Detroit’s perspective, moving him would likely be motivated by financial flexibility, as it would clear his $5.2 million salary. For Dallas, the appeal lies in taking a low-cost gamble on a player entering the final year before restricted free agency, with the option to retain his rights if he proves worth developing.

Sasser hails from Red Oak, Texas, a suburb just south of Dallas, and he played his high school ball there before becoming a four-year standout at the University of Houston.

Whether the deal stays modest a swap of a surplus player for salary relief and a second-round pick or expands into something more substantial remains unclear. Dallas is reportedly open to moving frontcourt pieces like Daniel Gafford or PJ Washington, while Detroit could face roster gaps if Jalen Duren or Tobias Harris depart.

Free agency kicks off at 6 p.m. today, and clarity on Detroit’s direction should come soon.

Still, it’s beginning to feel like Sasser has already suited up for the Pistons for the last time.
