The Philadelphia Phillies have orchestrated one of MLB’s most impressive reversals of fortune after switching managers in late April, yet that on-field resurgence hasn’t erased the weight of how the change came about.
As interim manager Don Mattingly has steered the team back into contention in the National League East following a remarkable turnaround since his arrival, Phillies principal owner John Middleton recently opened up about the organization’s choice to move on from longtime manager Rob Thomson.

Reflecting on the burdens of running a historic franchise, Middleton acknowledged that letting employees go remains the hardest aspect of his role.
“I, personally, find terminating someone the most difficult and the most unpleasant part of being an executive,” Middleton told The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber. “I’ve been doing this for over 45 years … and it was horrible the first time I had to do it, and I can’t tell you that it’s particularly better or easier nearly 50 years later. You’re really disrupting somebody’s life significantly, and you never can forget that.”
Those words provide a deeper look into the Phillies’ decision to part with Thomson following a rough stretch in which the team dropped 11 of 12 games prior to the switch. Though the move ultimately ignited a dramatic rally, Middleton stressed that tough personnel calls never become second nature.
He also made clear that Thomson’s bond with the franchise hasn’t been broken by the dismissal.
“Rob knows he’s always got a place in the organization. It’s really up to Rob to decide where and when and how, and we’ll work him in,” Middleton added, per Lauber.

Philadelphia’s climb under Mattingly has naturally shifted attention from the managerial change itself to the club’s playoff prospects. Beyond that, it appears Mattingly could emerge as a candidate for the permanent manager role going forward.
“Mattingly has said he would be interested in having the interim tag removed and possibly returning for a second season as manager,” the Associated Press reported. “He said (earlier this month) he wanted to table that discussion until the offseason.”
That topic may gain more urgency if the Phillies keep rising in the standings.
Since taking over, Mattingly has brought stability to a roster featuring Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Brandon Marsh, Cristopher Sanchez and Jhoan Duran. The team has gone from one of baseball’s biggest letdowns to a legitimate force in the second half.
Still, Middleton’s comments reveal that the organization hasn’t forgotten the manager who guided them through multiple playoff runs before this year’s struggles. Even as winning has quieted some of the criticism surrounding the decision, the owner’s reflections make it clear that replacing Thomson was never regarded as a simple or pleasant task—regardless of how justified the results have since appeared.
