Jalen Duren will end up with the Pistons no matter what for this reason

The 2026 NBA Free Agency period has officially tipped off, and the intrigue is already in full swing.
Jalen Duren has emerged as one of the most discussed names in the free agency chatter, especially since the Pistons and Duren couldn’t come to terms on an agreement before the market opened.
Still, Duren is ultimately going to end up back in Detroit, and here’s why.

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Marc Spears reported, “The Detroit Pistons have extended what the franchise views as the maximum possible offer for their All-Star restricted free agent Jalen Duren, have no interest in entertaining sign-and-trade scenarios, and are prepared to match any offer sheet he signs.”

Duren is still in line for a significant payday from whichever team puts an offer on the table, but Detroit holds the leverage because he’s a restricted free agent, not an unrestricted one.

This kind of situation has played out before De’Andre Ayton comes to mind, when he inked a hefty offer sheet with another club, only to have Phoenix match it and keep him from ever suiting up elsewhere.

Losing Duren would be a serious setback for the Pistons, especially after he earned an All-Star nod last season and played a key role on a Detroit squad that captured the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
And with Isaiah Stewart already traded away, letting Duren walk in free agency would leave them dangerously thin at the center spot.
