On Sunday, the Philadelphia Phillies secured a shutout win against the Colorado Rockies, marking their fourth straight series victory following a significant leadership change.

As their season began slipping away, the Phillies dismissed longtime manager Rob Thomson and promoted bench coach Don Mattingly to the role. Since then, the team has experienced a swift reversal of fortunes.

Jim Salisbury of NBC Philadelphia noted, “All of a sudden, the starting pitching sharpened up, the offense heated up, and the defense improved from poor to decent. By the end of Sunday, the Phillies had won 10 of their 13 games under Mattingly. They head into Monday’s scheduled off day with a 19-22 record nothing special, but far from lifeless and plenty of baseball still ahead.”

Though Mattingly and Thomson share a calm demeanor, the former Yankees first baseman has stated he doesn’t plan to overhaul the system but rather provide a fresh perspective. That shift in voice alone has sparked a temporary resurgence, though Mattingly has also implemented some practical changes.

Most notably, he gave struggling third baseman Alec Bohm two days off to reset, and Bohm returned to the lineup with renewed energy. Mattingly has also prioritized finding more playing time for Brandon Marsh.

Explaining his approach to the outfield adjustment, Mattingly emphasized a desire to revisit ideas that Thomson had quickly given up on.

“I want more versatility in our lineup,” Mattingly told reporters, per Matt Lauber. “He’s a good athlete. It seemed like one bad play in the outfield last time led to us abandoning the idea. I’m putting him back out there and letting him get some reps.”

With the team releasing Nick Castellanos, losing Rojas to a PED suspension, and demoting Otto Kemp shortly after Opening Day, the outfield presents a key opportunity to integrate someone like Sosa, who otherwise faces tough competition for infield playing time.

Ultimately, Mattingly appears willing to revive approaches Thomson previously shied away from, as he aims to pull the Phillies back from the edge of collapse.
