Plenty of people had been tracking Milan Momcilovic’s recruitment ever since he pulled his name out of the NBA Draft, and that waiting game officially wrapped up when the Iowa State transfer pledged to the Kentucky Wildcats.
With that decision now final, this could end up being the most significant recruiting victory of the Mark Pope era, and there’s a good deal of weight behind that claim.
For starters, Pope was in serious need of a statement addition. Kentucky had seen multiple players depart through graduation, the transfer portal, and the NBA Draft, which left the Wildcats facing a major roster overhaul heading into Pope’s third season. There are already promising pieces on the roster, including Zoom Diallo, Alex Wilkins, and Malachi Moreno, but Pope had also come up empty on several premier targets, such as Rob Wright and Tyran Stokes.

By securing Momcilovic, Kentucky finally lands the kind of established star it so badly required.
Another factor that makes this commitment stand out is the caliber of competition Kentucky had to beat. Pope has pulled off significant recruiting coups before, like convincing Jaxson Robinson to exit the NBA Draft and follow him from BYU to Kentucky even as Kansas pushed hard for him. He also brought in Koby Brea over programs including UConn, Kansas, Duke, and North Carolina, and later helped Brea develop into a second-round NBA Draft selection.
Kentucky also brought in Jayden Quaintance, one of the top transfer prospects nationally, though injuries held him to just four games during his one year in Lexington.

Momcilovic, though, has a different feel to it. Kentucky went head-to-head with programs such as Louisville, St. John’s, and Arizona for one of the most sought-after players on the market. He instantly steps in as one of the most accomplished and battle-tested players on the roster, having averaged double figures and built a reputation as one of the premier shooters in the college game.
Finally, this commitment arrives at a moment that many consider a critical juncture for Pope. The bar is always set sky-high at Kentucky, and after making it to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament in his debut season, the fan base is hungry to see the program keep moving forward on a path toward legitimate championship contention.
