ESPN just turned up the heat on Byrum Brown….. can he still come through for Auburn?

There’s no doubt that when Alex Golesh accepted the head coaching job at Auburn, one of his top priorities was bringing Byrum Brown along from South Florida. Brown has already proven his value, having thrown for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns last season with the Bulls, while also rushing for 1,008 yards and 14 scores.

But just how crucial will Brown be to Auburn’s chances of snapping a five-year losing streak? According to ESPN’s Billy Tucker, he’s absolutely essential. Tucker calls Brown the Tigers’ most important newcomer this offseason and the key to turning the offense around.

“Byrum Brown is the driving force behind Auburn’s offensive revival, reuniting with head coach Alex Golesh to lead a fast rebuild,” Tucker writes. “He’s arguably the most prolific dual-threat quarterback in college football the only player in 2025 to record over 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards, accounting for 42 total touchdowns.”

There’s plenty of pressure on Brown to perform
That’s a heavy burden, especially as he moves from the American Athletic Conference to the SEC. But that’s life as the go-to player and a quarterback in college football’s toughest conference. Add the fact that players are now getting paid—and Brown likely earned a significant sum to join the Tigers and the pressure only intensifies.

Still, Brown won’t need to do anything extraordinary to impress the average Auburn fan. Over the past four years, they’ve endured terrible quarterback play, with no reliable starter since Bo Nix in Bryan Harsin’s first season on the Plains.

Of course, Golesh wouldn’t have brought Brown to Auburn unless he was fully confident he’d succeed.

“What makes him special is how he raises the level of everyone around him,” Golesh said. “He pushes guys to compete harder every single day and demands excellence from himself and his teammates. I’m really excited to see him at Auburn. He loves our offense and system, and honestly, I couldn’t be happier that he’s coming with us.”

Only time will tell. Depending on how Brown performs this season, Golesh will either look like a genius or a fool.
