The Boston Red Sox will be without slugging first baseman Willson Contreras for Tuesday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Contreras exited Sunday’s game after being hit by a pitch, though both he and interim manager Chad Tracy downplayed the severity of the injury. Red Sox insider Chris Cotillo echoed that sentiment, writing on X Monday: “As I understand it, Red Sox are still cautiously optimistic on Willson Contreras’ hand injury and will re-assess when he arrives Tuesday. As of now, there’s at least a chance he plays tomorrow against the Phillies. But it’s a read-and-react thing.”

Still, when Boston announced its starting lineup for Tuesday, Contreras’ name was absent.
The Red Sox’s lineup for the game is as follows:
Jarren Duran, LF
Mickey Gasper, 1B
Wilyer Abreu, RF
Masataka Yoshida, DH
Trevor Story, SS
Ceddanne Rafaela, CF
Marcelo Mayer, 2B
Carlos Narvaez, C
Caleb Durbin, 3B
Jovani Moran will serve as the opener, with Brayan Bello expected to handle the bulk of the innings. Contreras’ absence is a significant setback, as he has been a cornerstone of Boston’s offense.
So far this season, Contreras is batting .259 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs over 135 at-bats.
First pitch for the Phillies–Red Sox series opener at Fenway Park is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET.
