Former Kentucky target Rob Wright just absolved Mark Pope of his apparent whiff

At this stage of the offseason, fresh off securing Milan Momcilovic in a major recruiting victory, it’s almost difficult to remember that Kentucky had been aggressively pursuing BYU guard Robert Wright III. The pursuit was so intense that, when Wright ultimately chose to return to the Cougars, Mark Pope faced widespread criticism for supposedly missing out on the talented point guard.

However, in a clip shared on X by Cougar Sports Media (via BYU Basketball), Wright opened up about his earlier trip to Lexington, offering a fresh perspective on that chapter and, in doing so, appearing to clear Coach Pope’s name.

Collin Chandler also appears in the footage and… has a buzz cut now? I really hope he’s doing okay.

In any case, Wright began by explaining, “The whole process was moving kind of fast. With BYU we were trying to get something worked out, but the timeline and everything just wasn’t coming together at the right time.”

“So coach and them just encouraged me to enter the portal and see my options,” Wright continued, “I did end up taking a visit to Kentucky… I just wanted to come back to BYU. That was my mindset the whole time.” Now more than ever, we have a much clearer understanding of what truly took place.

Wright’s Recruitment is Clearer Than Ever
Essentially, while national media outlets were leaning toward Kentucky landing Wright Jeff Goodman even went so far as to call the Wildcats “the heavy favorite” the soon-to-be junior guard was simply biding his time while negotiations in Provo came together.

If I’m interpreting this correctly, Pope and his staff were operating with an outside chance, attempting to disrupt the process. If Wright never truly planned to leave in the first place, it’s hard to label that as a real failure on Pope’s part.

Especially considering that, not long after, Kentucky secured a commitment from Zoom Diallo, who had visited Lexington prior to Wright and seemed to be a primary target for the Wildcats from the very beginning.

It’s remarkable how quickly narratives can gain momentum without much substance behind them. A number of people may owe Kentucky’s head coach an apology.

Mark Pope is Owed an Apology
Pope, with the addition of Momcilovic along with five-star 2027 freshman Ryan Hampton, had already effectively moved past any supposed shortcomings with what might be the strongest recruiting week of his tenure.

Wright’s reflections on what might have been only reinforce, in my view, that Pope had more command over this offseason than we initially realized.

While Wright and Chandler take charge out west, the entire Big Blue Nation has its attention fixed on a Kentucky team beginning summer practices and searching for one more marquee addition to round out the roster. Things are proceeding just fine in Lexington as a crucial third season for Pope approaches.
